Lowering one's body load or cellular load of deuterium, is commonly known under terms such as "deuterium depletion", "DDW Biohacking", "Depletion with Light Water" or simpler terms like "Drinking of DDW".

Water is commonly perceived to be H2O, but in reality it is a multi-component mixture of various isotopes. The one we think of as water, is H2O (2 x hydrogen + 1 oxygen). Heavy water and semi-heavy water on the other hand, has replaced both or one of the hydrogen atoms, with the heavy form called deuterium.
Deuterium is basically hydrogen where the core has one added neutron in contrast to normal hydrogen that has none. This increases its mass by double and thereby changes its properties.
Hydrogen is vital for life and as such is a key player in a large number of processes where weight, mass, magnetic field, electric charge and many more are important. Exchanging deuterium in water, will therefore affect energy production via ATP-synthase, but also effect enzymes, hormones, DNA and more.
Depleting the cells or "liberating them" from part of their deuterium load, will lead to reversal of these negative effects, and had been shown to optimize a host of processes that reaches fields such as sports performance, detox pathways, ability to withstand toxicity and radiation, cancer research in humans and animals, anti-aging, antioxidant status and more.
Deuterium Depleted Water (DDW) is known to have promoting effects on cellular energy production, on the nano-motor sites of the ATP-synthase. Deuterium depletion via DDW, has a promoting effect on energy production and efficiency, as well as on post workout recovery, including a decrease in free radical production, lactate levels and pro-inflammatory markers.
It is also noteworthy that drinking deuterium depleted water is associated with increased VO2-max at same training load.

Most foods or dietary compounds that offer some protection against toxins, radiation or the free radicals generated as a consequence, do so by donating free electrons thereby reacting or binding to the free radical. Good examples are Vitamin-C, Vitamin-E, and Iodine to name a few.
The protecting mechanism is entirely different in Deuterium Depleted Water (DDW). “The effect of deuterium depleted drinking water on the performance of sportsmen”
The authors saw an optimization in a host of parameters during the research study period, that lasted for 44 days.
Twelve professional male rowers participated in the study – 7 athletes consumed 2 L of 105 ppm Deuterium Depleted Water for 44 days and 5 athletes drank ordinary tap water. Both groups underwent a multistage load test at the start and end of the study.
Pulse rate was continuously monitored. Acid-base parameters (pH, pCO2, pO2, HCO3, base excess), ions (Na+, K+, Cl–), blood lactate and blood glucose, as well as the anion gap were determined from capillary blood samples.
The results: Improved tissue oxygenation, less pronounced tissue anoxia, better mobilization and utilization of glucose, and the cells showed a better metabolic compensation of the load-dependent changes in deuterium-depleted state achieved by consumption of 105 ppm DDW.

This study confirms other references studies that shows, that a link between aging and Deuterium is well established in that D2O concentrations exceeding the natural level resulted in numerous adverse effects:
The study goes on to discuss and conclude that Deuterium Depleted Light Water (DDW) did counteract the shortened life-span resulting from the study setup, but from that data alone and the short exposure time, the study could by itself not prove that DDW in general increased lifespan. The authors did however go on to take more of the known data into account, when they stated the following:

Results of 28 days of drinking 1 liter of DDW revealed in every subject an improvement in health and reduced anxiety with improved psychological response.
The positive influence of drinking light DDW water on blood chemistries included a significant reduction of glycose, cholesterol, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukocyte counts and cortisol levels, while also revealed an increase in antioxidant capacities.
Volunteers who consumed 1 liter of light DDW water per day improved their hemodynamic parameters (i.e.: increased stroke volume and cardiac output, decreased total peripheral vascular resistance), which had a positive impact on overall physical performance and aerobic metabolism during an exercise.
Deuterium Depletion Research and Cancer
”Biological Significance of Naturally Occurring Deuterium: The Antitumor Effect of Deuterium Depletion” Gábor Somlyai et al.
Deuterium deplet ed water (25 ppm) induced complete or partial tumor regression in dogs and cats with spontaneous malignancies, it was registered as anticancer for veterinary use in 1999 (Vetera-DDW-25 A.U.V., 13/99 FVM). The hypodermic preparation of the registered veterinary drug was successfully tested in clinical investigations.
A randomized, double blind controlled, human Phase II clinical trial with prostate cancer (Under the Hungarian Institute of Pharmacology No. 5621/40/95) was performed, which exhibited a significant difference between the control and treated groups with respect to the examined parameters, median survival time and the extension of life-span.
The study suggests that cells are able to regulate the D/H ratio and the changes in the D/H ratio can trigger certain molecular mechanisms having a key role in cell cycle regulation. The study further supposes that not the shift in the intracellular pH, but the concomitant increase in the D/H ratio is the real trigger for the cells to enter into S phase.
